Point-of-Care Imaging

Point-of-care imaging and affordable AI at the Albarqouni Lab, University of Bonn: portable MRI, handheld ultrasound, mobile-phone apps and telemedicine.

Point-of-care imaging brings diagnosis to the bedside, the clinic and low-resource settings — with portable MRI, handheld ultrasound, phone cameras and lightweight AI that runs where the patient is.

This is where our focus on affordable AI becomes concrete. MRIQT makes portable ultra-low-field neonatal MRI diagnostically useful, GCA-US-AI diagnoses giant cell arteritis from ultrasound, and our fetal ultrasound work targets congenital diaphragmatic hernia. A mobile app supports the classification of eyelid tumours, Affordable Retina detects retinal diseases from affordable colour fundus photography, and with the German University in Cairo we work on low-cost breast lesion detection. It started with telemedicine in Palestine in 2008, and continues today in training programmes across the Arab world (EEDA, SAAI, BILD and the SANAD network).

We design models that are small, data-efficient and robust to lower image quality, so that AI reaches patients far from specialist centres.
